Pie franco means the vine is not grafted onto an American rootstock. The root is of the variety itself. In almost all of Europe that is exceptional: nineteenth-century phylloxera forced grafting. In corners of Jumilla, sandy soil or isolation allowed vines to keep their original root.
Why it matters
The plant drinks the soil without an intermediary. The bunch is usually smaller, the expression clearer, sometimes more austere. It is not automatically “better”: it is more honest with the place.

Marzas was born of that idea: ungrafted Monastrell, direct, mineral, to drink with the charcuterie of the land. A bottle that explains the soil before the wood.
