Crianza wine

Crianza wines are those that have an ageing of 24 months, of which they may spend between six and twelve months in barrel.

The remaining time matures in the bottle, which must be sealed with cork and in a horizontal position, without contact with light and with barely a slight passage of oxygen.

White and rosé Crianza wines, by contrast, have an ageing time that does not exceed 18 months and the time in barrel is the same as that of the red wine.

Criteria for classifying wine

The principal criterion for classifying red, rosé or white wine is usually the use of the grape varieties employed in the making.

In several European countries of wine-growing tradition, such as Spain, Italy or France, the grape varieties stand out and make the wines of these countries of such quality and of a unique personality.

Spain differs from other forms of wine classification used in other countries: its way of categorising is much broader and has to do with the time of maturation of the wines.

For example, the process of ageing at the moment of determining the organoleptic characteristics and a wine with the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja means the guarantee that the wine has the certification of the Consejo Regulador and that it meets high levels of quality.

  • Wines with Denominación de Origen Calificada DOCa pass an ageing time of 2 years, of which they spend 1 year in oak barrels of 225 litres, Bordeaux barrels.
  • In rosé and white wines, the estimated time of ageing in barrel is usually six months; during this time the barrel allows contact between the wine and the wood, with a degree of micro-oxygenation that permits a slow, controlled oxidation.

These factors cause the organoleptic characteristics of the wine to be transformed, and thereby to develop subtler, more complex odours, that is, tertiary aromas of the wine such as toast, wood and spice; despite this process the wines do not lose their fruity and floral nuances.

An important characteristic of this process is that the colour of the wine changes, as it loses a certain brightness and violet reflections when compared with young wines.

Red Crianza wines are characterised by an intense cherry red.

White wines develop much more golden nuances.

The texture and flavours of Crianza wines are usually more structured and balanced, and they have more body thanks to the quantity of elegant, velvety tannins.
